At Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais [UFMG], I was Chair of the Master’s Program in Administration, which became renowned as one of the best in the country during my term of office. I also set up the Center for Research in International Business [GGI] and the Centre for Technology Innovation and Transfer [CTIT].
In my early career at UFMG I founded the first research center for international business research in Brazil to draw attention to the effects of the growing globalization of markets and to the increasing role of emerging countries in defining the direction of the global economy.
I developed exchange programs between UFMG and the University of Cambridge, the London School of Economics, and George Washington University and between the University of Birmingham Business School and Catholic University of Minas Gerais.
In 2003, while a full professor at the University of Birmingham Business School, I co-founded and became Director of the Centre for International Business and Organization Research [CIBOR]. In 2010, I founded and was the Director of the Erasmus Centre for Emerging Markets, with the goal of integrating the knowledge generated by several research centers at Erasmus University, including the Department of Business and Society and the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. As Director, I fostered awareness of African economic development and emphasized the importance of growing economic and cultural cooperation between Africa and China and its implication for the global economy and international business. I established links between the Centre, the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and OECD, to increase interest in carrying out research on Sub-Saharan Africa and on its economic and business relationships with emerging markets. I also worked with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a research initiative that looked at the integration of aid and trade.
